Avignon

What to visit in the city?

On the borders of Provence and the Rhone Valley, Avignon is waiting for you on the banks of the Durance and the Rhone. In the city that has been known for centuries as the "City of the Popes", you will discover the art of living in Provence. An art of living that appeals to your senses as much as your curiosity. And for good reason, behind its magnificent ramparts, the heritage of Avignon is revealed to you as you walk along.

Steps that will, of course, lead you to the Palais des Papes. The cultural centre of the city, this Gothic monument takes you back to the 14th century, when Avignon was the centre of Christianity. A fortress as much as a palace, the site offers a historical tour where augmented reality and imagination collide and bring to life the frescoes, the ceremonial rooms and the cloisters.

Leave the fascinating silhouette of the palace behind, and continue your tour of Avignon by heading north of the city centre. Walk past the Romanesque basilica of Notre-Dame-des-Doms to the Petit Palais museum. All that's left is to walk to the middle of the Rhône thanks to the famous Pont d'Avignon and whistle that tune from our youth: "sur le pont d'Avignon, on y danse...".

Whether it's the famous Avignon Festival, "Cheval Passion" or the "Ban des Vendanges" in August, Avignon is punctuated by unmissable events that offer you as many opportunities to discover the old town as to savour one of the wines of the Rhône Valley. Indeed, in this open-air Provencal museum, nothing goes better with the Bohémienne than a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
